Planking, Parkour and the 13-Year-Old Daredevil

6 Sep

Decompressing after a long day at work, my nephew approached me carefully this evening to ask if I would check his homework.  As he joined me on the couch, we began an easy discussion about his school day, his grades and his classes, but the conversation quickly took a random and a quirky turn.

“Tee Tee, I think I want to try parkour, and I also think it would be cool if we went planking…like in Walmart.”

Blink. Blink. Blink.

Yeah, that was me with a dumfounded look on my face, trying to figure out if my kid was somehow telling me in teen-speak that he was experimenting with some sinister pharmaceuticals. But alas no, after further probing, I found out to my relief that he was just being…well a kid, wanting to do silly kid things.

For those of you like me who do not keep up with the various nonsensical phenomena that set the internet ablaze, here’s a quick lesson:

  1. Planking is an activity consisting of lying face down in an unusual or bizarre location. When “planking”, your hands must touch the sides of the body and your feet must remain pointed.  You must also have a photograph taken of you in your planked position.  The more unusual the location, the better.
  2.  Parkour is the physical discipline of training the body to navigate from point A to B and overcome any obstacle within one’s path by adapting one’s movements to the environment.

Now, after my nephew explained more fully what the activities actually entailed, I did recall having been impressed with parkour back in 2006, thanks to that uber-athletic dude (Sébastien Foucan) in the James Bond movie, Casino Royale.  Then of course, he had to ruin things by YouTubing both parkour and planking so that I could get a visual understanding of what he one day aspired to be able to accomplish thanks to body control.

Let’s just say that effective immediately, this kid has been instructed to find some new hobbies.
